So yesterday when briefly talking about Avatar, I said: "And I thought about Polish cavalry charging German tanks and how people repeating history isn't so much heartbreaking as it is a stupid result of bad strategy. I expect that wasn't exactly what they wanted me to think about."
And
jeza_red said: "I'm always curious about that "Polish Cavalry" thing... funny stereotype, almost as funny as "history" classes some people have attended."
And I thought: "Wait? What? That didn't happen?" So I looked it up. And found that the Polish Cavalry actually charged infantry at Krojanty, took machine gun fire, many casualties, and had to retreat; although they'd delayed the German advance and the mission was considered a success. The tanks came from a reporter's misinterpretation of the bodies on the battlefield after the Battle of Tuchola Forest and the charge that never happened became myth. A myth of tragic bravery against overwhelming odds but still, myth.
So I apologised to
jeza_red because I imagine that, being Polish, she's a little tired of her country's history being misrepresented world wide. Also, she definitely has a point about the history classes I took.
Although it's been so long things are definitely blurry, I suspect not much, if any at all, of the scant WWII history I had touched on anything but the Canadian involvement. A little Dieppe, a little Vimy Ridge, a mention of Hong Kong and otherwise, nada. And lest you think all the Canadian bases were covered, I lived in a town where there was a POW camp during WWI and II and would never have known it had my grandfather not been stationed there during WWII. It was never mentioned in the nine years I went to school less than ten kilometers away from it.
Anyway, this whole thing made me wonder how much "popular knowledge" of history is less than factual. A proportion we'll never realize if the people who know the facts don't sigh deeply and jump in. Thanks to
jeza_red , I found out something I didn't know.
Now you know it too.
Henry had a split second to shift his body before his full weight landed on top of Vicki as she let out an, "oomph." The motel's darkened room didn't keep him from seeing her startled expression and he snuggled close, "I didn't think you could take all of me at once."
Not able to see him clearly in the dark, she traced the outline of his smile with her finger tips, "You have a high opinion of your assets."
Frowning into her fingers he said, "You know perfectly well I meant my weight."
Her lips formed an evil grin as she said, "Gotcha."

1. Sherlock Holmes
This movie has no socially redeeming value. But it does have Robert Downy Jr. and Jude Law and, more importantly because I love both Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Guy Ritchie. Loved it lots. Will definitely buy the DVD.
2. Avatar
Not exactly deep but damned pretty and, frankly, I don't much appreciate deep in my movies. I'm all about the escape. And lo, there was escape. Also Sam Worthington. And Sigourny Weaver. Disney should take note - if they'd colored Pocahontas blue and added a tail and given me 3D glasses, recent evidence suggests I'd have been much more interested in sticking it out until the end.
I cried when they wanted me to. I laughed when they wanted me to. I was enthralled when they wanted me to be. And I thought about Polish cavalry charging German tanks (eta: which is myth and they actually and successfully charged infantry; my bad) and how people repeating history (eta: or, as it happens, myth) isn't so much heartbreaking as it is a stupid result of bad strategy. I expect that wasn't exactly what they wanted me to think about.
It was an amazing experience and Cameron has pretty much proven that there's a way to put nearly anything up on screen. Go him.
Seeing the new year has rolled around (and I nothing new to say, since I haven't actually done a whole lot that is interesting yet), I thought I'd do a random list of good things and bad things of 2009. So, without further fuss, here it is:
Best thing that happened to me in 2009: Kasey wasn't hurt in the several accidents she had.
Best writing related thing that happened to me: Both Deadly Desire and Bound to Shadows hit 6 on the NY Times bestseller list. You have no idea how much I danced those days. Thank you all for making it possible.
Best general writing thing that happened: There's two--several lulus got requests, and Charlaine Harris proved that urban fantasy really does rule at the moment!
Best movie of 2009: Star Trek. Many may not agree but the mere fact that I've watched it over 15 times says something about my love. I think it's the best reboot I've ever seen and I can't wait for the next one. (and I'm not blind to the problems the movie had--I just don't care!)
Best movie of 2009 runner up: Without a doubt, Avatar. Yeah, the storyline might be a tad predictable, but who really gives a damn? The imagery was beautiful and it made you believe (and having close-ups of Sam Worthington didn't hurt, either :) )
Most overrated movie of 2009--Terminator Salvation. Christian Bale as the charismatic John Connor? Who in their right mind thought that was a good idea?
The stealer award: This has to go to Sam Worthington for stealing Salvation from under Bale's nose. He, Moon Bloodgood and Anton Yelchin were the best things about that movie.
Best book read of 2009: Sadly, I didn't really read much last year. I get onto something of a historical kick in the latter half of the year and have read--and really enjoyed--most of Julia Quinn's novels. I also enjoyed Loretta Chase's Lord of Scoundrels. Urban Fantasy wise, I again didn't read much, but I loved Iiona Andrew's Magic Strikes.
Low point of 2009: The divorce coming though. He was a liar and a cheat, but it's still hard to walk away from 30 years of your life. Especially when you're all but walking away from people you've come to see as your second family.
Hopes for 2010:
All the lulus get contracts.
All the Dames get contracts and/or hit the bestseller lists (let Dame domination begin!)
The book in the back of my brain actually makes it onto the computer screen.
Another contract would always be good (need to pay off the house. lol)
Oh, and world peace. (yes, I watch too many Sandra Bullock movies :) )
Last night at midnight the lights went out. At first I thought that was an omen for bad things to come, but the more I thought about it, the more I came to believe it wasn't a bad sign.
The lights were still on downstairs, so I choose to take it this way. It was my mom telling me Happy New Year.
So Happy New Year to you all, tell the people you love that you do, take a minute to miss the ones you've lost and say a prayer, as always, for those who aren't lucky enough to safe at home.
Happy New Year my friends.

But, sometimes, you need more than 140 characters. I'll let their editor-in-chief do the talking:

Henry gestured for Vicki to to take her seat as he sat across the isle, fastened his seat belt, took a deep breath, closed his eyes and waited for the plane to take off.
Vicki sat, fastened her seat belt and turned her head to watch Henry. She couldn't see his face but felt his tension mounting as the plane's engines built the power needed to race down the field and lift it's wings toward the sky. Speaking softly she asked, "If you hate this so much, why did you fly back here in the first place?"

Take a minute to make sure your loved ones know you love them and say a silent thank you to the men and women who are serving this country, whether they're stateside or half way around the world.
Never take for granted one minute you have with them. And if they're waiting for you on the other side, try to ease your heart with the knowledge that one day you'll see them again.
Know they love you still and honor their memory.
Be safe everyone!
